Description of art: Based on North Devon, the work speaks of landscape, memory, familiarity and a strong connection with place and home.
Centred around Braunton, a village steeped in history, the world of maps and aerial views have provided a wealth for mark making, texture and colour.
By using free machine embroidery, a dynamic range of fabrics and by applying cold water dyes in a painterly manner, the work carries freedom, fluidity and energy.
Process and making have been integral to concept. Using salvaged, hoarded, scavenged and inherited fabrics, memories have almost been stitched into the work itself, locking in echoes of the domestic and the in-severable ties to home.

What's it all about?
Well,
we opened our complementary therapy Centre back in March and we are now
trying to expand into the 'active living' pastimes as a way of getting
people out and about and doing something acive. We are also very
keen on supporting other business people in the area. So, we came
up with the idea of holding a 'showcase weekend' which would promote
local artists and maybe inspire other people to get up and do some
drawing, painting, photographing etc themselves.
The plan for
the 6th/7th is very simple. Local artists can come and display
whatever they like at the Centre. They are welcome to use what
resources we have (e.g. a few small tables) and are welcome to bring
along their own display stands, boards etc.
We have an open
downstairs room and three therapy rooms up stairs. If there are
enough exhibitors, then we can fold away the massage chairs etc so that
we can increase the display space. We will also consider putting
a few nails into a few walls too, especially for artists that would
wish to leave some items in the Centre. We already sell items in
the Centre for a small commission and would consider doing this as an
offshoot for the event. We would not be seeking any commission on
anything sold during the 6th/7th.
So, in essence, we are
offering a free venue and free sales to anyone who would wish to
attend. All we would ask in return is to take some photographs of
the artists, displays and visitors during the weekend for our
advertising campaign!
